Why Use a Dog to detect mold?

Mold can be hidden behind walls, flooring, pretty much anywhere.

Unlike all the other tests that may be able to tell you there is mold in your house, they can’t tell you exactly where it is.

The results are immediate, no waiting for the test results to come back, such as in an ERMI test.

The inspection is comprehensive as the dog will search your whole house to find all evidence of mold, allowing you to feel confident with moving forward with remediation.

The brilliance of using a dog is that they can tell you exactly where the mold is located.

This can save you money when it comes to remediation costs as well as the amount of time it takes to free your house of mold.

How we got here

When I was exposed to mold in 2019, it disrupted my whole life. It increased my anxiety, worsened my eyesight, and caused brain fog, but we still didn’t know where the exposure was from.

Over the next 4 years, I had my home tested for mold. While we were able to determine there was mold, no one could tell me exactly where the mold was located. It was extremely frustrating. I was still struggling to rid my body of the mold toxins, while being constantly exposed to more.

During an appointment, my doctor mentioned that she wished we had a mold sniffing dog in our area. That caught my attention. I’ve been training dogs since 1982, and my husband and I co-own a pet supply store and a dog boarding and grooming facility. Dogs are my livelihood.

As soon as I got home from that appointment, I enrolled my Border Terrier, Acorn, in a training program to become a mold sniffing dog.

On top of that, he competes in Earthdog, an event that assesses a dog’s ability to hunt underground by following the scent of prey.

Acorn is a Border Terrier, small dogs that specialize in navigating through tight spaces to hunt prey, perfect for getting into the nooks and crannies of your business or home. He is one of a few highly trained dogs in the country who is certified to detect mold.

Acorn was trained and certified by Bill Whitstine, a trainer with 30 years of experience training dogs to detect bombs, accelerants, drugs, bed bugs, mold and a variety of other substances.
